McConnico Cemetery – Clairborne, AL
McConnico Cemetery is located in Monroe county Alabama off I-84 on the banks of the Alabama River. This cemetery is haunted by the ghosts of 12 Union horsemen. An early eyewitness account, back in 1865, recalled an encounter with two columns of six soldiers on gray horses passing by on either side of the eyewitness’ carriage. Each of the soldiers wore white gloves and a white bandage wrapped around his head.
The witnesses believed they had seen victims of the Confederate soldier Lafayette Seigler, who ambushed and killed Union soldiers then cut off their ears. Supposedly Seigler kept a collection of the ears he had collected. Sightings of these soldiers have been reported for over a century.
