This cemetery is said to be haunted by six headless white horses who belonged to John Peter Van Ness, who built the beautiful Van Ness Mausoleum for his wife Ann who died in childbirth in 1822. Mr. Van Ness joined his wife in the mausoleum in 1846 after he passed away. His six beloved white horses pulled his funeral carriage through the streets of Washington. The ghostly horse apparitions are sometimes seen circling the mausoleum. History tells of a driver who was once forced off the nearby Rock Creek Parkway by the misty outlines of six headless white horses.
